Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is difficult for teachers to be both popular (well-liked) and effective in helping students learn.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Being a popular teacher in the classroom is not so difficult, but effective teaching may be the hardest job there is. In the classroom, the teacher goes into work to help students learn and not to seek short-lived popularity. It may be assumed that ultimately the most effective teachers tend to be liked by a lot of students but very much disliked by a small number of others.
To begin with, trying to be popular is the last thing a teacher should want to be. Too often some teachers try to manage situations by aiming to be over-friendly with students, but that is a fool’s errand because students might first find the class amusing, only to find soon the excessive familiarity tiresome. Given that everybody has to go to school, this does not mean that everybody is going to enjoy it. Therefore, it would be a foolish mistake to make popularity a goal. To make things worse, teachers will lose credibility with their students if they do not know what they are teaching other than bringing too much fun to the learning environment, thus making the teaching ineffective. In all likelihood, ineffective teachers are more dedicated to being popular than helping students learn.
So, what do effective teachers typically do? What they do best are related to both content mastery and practical experience to serve as effective professionals who inspire students to learn by being the decisive element in the classroom. Figuratively speaking, effective teachers create the learning climate that makes the weather favorable for effective leaning. So tremendous is the power that a student’s school life could be made miserable or joyous. Far from seeking to be popular, effective teachers can even be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration; and with the right amount of tension, they are capable of hurting or healing for the sake of effectiveness. In all situations, it is their response that decides whether a tension will be escalated or de-escalated in order to be effective.
As a conclusion, effective teachers will turn out to be mostly adored and remembered while teachers trying to be popular are likely to be forgotten. When it comes to being a professional educator, it is one thing to please students and it is quite another to inspire them. Of all the hard jobs around, one of the hardest is being an effective teacher.
